Keeping multiple children organized as you homeschool can seem daunting, but it doesn’t need to be. There are some simple systems you can teach your children to help them keep their supplies and books organized.
Assign each child a particular color. Then get all their folders, notebooks, binders, and containers for organizing in that color. Color coding makes it easier for everyone to keep track of their own supplies.
Once you’ve assigned colors, next you’ll need to choose a system that keeps their books and supplies together.
Our family uses the file crate system. Plastic file crates are available in a variety of colors at the beginning of the school year, which makes it easy to color code them.
Get a file crate for each child in their color. Then keep all their supplies and books in their crate. It’s basically their own personal school locker.
There are many benefits to using the file crate system:
- It keeps everything together for your child in one place.
- The crates have handles so they can be carried to different areas where you’re doing school.
- They’re affordable.
- You don’t need to have space for a dedicated school room to take advantage of the file crate system.
- They’re large enough to fit binders and textbooks, plus still have room for containers for supplies like pencils and markers.
- File crates can stack on top of each other.
- They are open, which makes finding supplies and books easier.
The backpack method is similar to using a file crate, but instead you keep each child’s supplies in a backpack. Using backpacks to keep each child’s supplies handy is nice for portability.
Assign a Shelf
If you have a dedicated school room and your children don’t need the option to carry their supplies to other rooms in the house, try assigning each child a shelf where they keep their books and supplies.
Train Your Child
A system will only work if it’s used. Choose a system that is simple and fits your family’s needs. Then train your children to put their supplies and books back where you have designated.
