If you have ever taught a child how to read, you know what satisfaction that can give you as a parent. I have to admit, when I first started homeschooling, one of the most daunting tasks in my mind was teaching my daughter how to read. There are ways that you can make learning to read fun for your child and less stressful for you. Keep reading to find out how my four year old started reading.

My oldest child, now almost 19 years old, struggled when learning how to read. She did not like reading physical books and way back then there weren’t as many online reading websites available for homeschoolers to use. It was a difficult time for us as she was my first attempt at homeschooling and I had in mind the levels of achievement she should have obtained each step of the way. Can you relate?

We have two kids and they are eight years apart. By the time our youngest was born I had some homeschool experience under my belt and I was ready for this adventure. I am sure I am not the only one who has wanted to implement changes after some unsuccessful homeschool approaches with the first child, right?

When my daughter was just 4 years old she was ready to start learning. I didn’t push her to do preschool, but she was eager to learn and I wanted to embrace that. My oldest child was in the beginning of high school and she still needed my help with some things, so I looked to online learning for our youngest. She showed an interest in reading and I had been partnering with Reading Eggs for a time and decided that would be a great place to start.

Free 4 Week Trial for Reading Eggs

Reading Eggs claimed they could have my child reading in 4-weeks, which was enough to pique my interest and get me to sign up. My daughter loved the colorful graphics and high-quality animation. She has always enjoyed games and the ones on Reading Eggs stimulated her desire to learn how to read even more.

So, was she reading after 4 weeks? Yes, and no. She wasn’t reading paragraphs yet, but she was reading short words and started sounding everything out that had words. She actually sought out words everywhere – stop signs, mail, magazines, and books. It became a game to her – finding words and trying to read them. She continued with Reading Eggs for years and it grew with her. When they added on a level for older children, she wanted to take advantage of that.

Now she is 10-years old and has a ninth grade reading level. Was it all due to Reading Eggs? Probably not…she is pretty smart. I do credit Reading Eggs for making my life easier as a homeschool mom by helping her to learn how to read though.
