Africa Continent

Africa isn’t only hot because of the weather. I am going to take this opportunity to share my passion with you.

Africa and MMA

Right now in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), there are three champions from the continent of Africa!

Israel Adesanya (Nigerian) is the Middleweight Champion, Kamaru Usman (also Nigerian) is the Welterweight Champion, and Francis Ngannou (from Cameroon) is the Heavy Weight Champion. These three men are absolutely fantastic and talented. Above all, they consider themselves brothers, help each other out, and have been great champions.

They just seem like all-around nice guys. It is so nice to see people at that level being great examples for children who practice MMA. Of course, this has helped my kids engage with our lessons about the continent of Africa. They immediately looked up Nigeria and Cameroon on the globe.

We couldn’t just stop there, obviously. Our kids learned so much more about the continent of Africa.

Africa Geography

Discussing Africa’s geography with your kids will be an attention grabber.

The continent of Africa, as we mentioned above, is the world’s hottest continent. 60% of its land surface is deserts and drylands. Africa is also the most centrally-located continent in the world.

You can use this as a visual on a globe or map in your homeschool to show how the prime meridian (0 degrees longitude) and the equator (0 degrees latitude) cut right across it. Since the equator passes right through the continent, it receives direct sunlight throughout the year.

The African continent also holds the Nile River, the world’s longest river, and the Sahara, the world’s largest desert. Another cool aspect of Africa’s geography that my daughter found awesome was that Senegal has a pink lake!

Africa, the Continent

You guys are homeschoolers, so this may not be an issue you have heard of, but do you know some people think Africa is a country? In fact, there are 54 sovereign countries in Africa – 48 countries on the continental mainland and six island nations.

As you might expect from the second-largest continent and one with so many countries, the population is huge, too. There are about 1.3 billion people living there. Consequently, there are over 2,000 different languages spoken on the continent.

Africa has many minerals like oil, copper, gold, diamonds, platinum, and it has numerous agricultural products such as corn, coffee, wheat, and fruits.
