South America is North America’s closest neighbor, so the natural progression in our homeschool was to go there next.

My kids and I were also a little biased, as one of our favorite martial arts is from South America – Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. 

We have really gotten so much out of our unit studies on continents this far. We cover so many topics with just one overarching topic. From geography to history to music, South America will be an exciting unit for your kids at home.

Geography of South America

There are 12 countries in South America and 3 additional areas that are not independent nations that have a combined population of 433 million people.

The largest country in South America is Brazil. It covers over half of the continent’s landmass. It’s a little smaller than the United States and a little larger than Australia.

My kids were really interested in the Amazon Rainforest and Amazon River, the second-largest river in the world (1st is the Nile). They thought it was cool that the Amazon River carried more water than all the other 10 biggest rivers combined.

Want to know another crazy thing about South America’s geography? Even though it is home to the Amazon Rainforest, one of the wettest places on the planet, it is also home to the Atacama Desert – the driest place on earth.
