With my daughter’s newfound fascination with the Japanese language and Korean Pop music (K-Pop), I knew she would enjoy our next continent unit on Asia. Asia truly is a continent full of rich culture and traditions with colorful visualizations that will catch any child’s attention.
Facts About Asia
- The continent of Asia is made up of 48 different countries and has a population of 4.5 billion people. (Yup… billion.) That is almost 60% of the total world population – more than all the other continents of the world combined.
- The largest country in Asia is Russia (Russia is actually in Eurasia – part in Asia and part in Europe). 77% of Russia is in Asia. The second largest is China, then India.
- The Maldives is the smallest country in Asia and happens to be one of the smallest countries in the world.
- Of course, common to many of us is the fact that Asia holds the very highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest.
Asia has so much for kids to learn about that you can spend a LOT of time in Asia alone learning about history, geography, and culture.
Asia History Facts
- In Southeast Asia, Thailand is the only country that has never been colonized by Europeans.
- My husband loves to read about the Mongolian Empire which conquered a large part of Asia in the 13th century.
- Following the Second World War, many Asian countries became independent from European rule.
- In the decades after this, Japan became the world’s largest economy in what has been known as the Japanese post-war economic “miracle.”
Asia Geography Facts
- The continent has the second-longest coastline which stretches a whopping 80,205 miles (129,077 km).
- The infamous Himalayas are found in Nepal and China.
- Asia has the lowest and highest points of land in the world. Of course, Mout Everest has the highest point while the Dead Sea is the world’s lowest point.
- The Great Wall of China in Asia is the only manmade structure that can be seen from outer space (it’s only visible sometimes from the International Space Station and low orbits).
- The largest cave in the world can be found in Vietnam. It is called the Son Doon and is large enough to hold a plane inside of it – not that it has been done!

Asian Culture Facts
- India has over 800 different languages.
- Chinese New Year lasts 15 days.
- The Japanese have the second-highest lifespan in the world with many people living to an average age of 100 years.
- As far as exports are concerned, Asia (India) is the largest producer and exporter of mango in the entire world. THANK YOU, Asia! We love mangos in our home.
- While we are stating some cool things about Asia, my kids thought it was interesting that Asia housed the world’s largest and deepest freshwater lake, Lake Baikal.
- The continent of Asia’s population consumes 90% of the world’s rice.
- It was also interesting to find that Asia has the highest number of billionaires in the whole world. As a matter of fact, the city of Tokyo, Japan, has more millionaires than in Paris, San Francisco, or Los Angeles!
Quite obviously, I can go on and on with these amazing things our homeschool found by studying Asia, but I will stop there.
