Biography of John James Audubon:
John James Audubon was born in April 26, 1785 in a french colony in Haiti. He grew up in France, and moved to America when he was 18 years old. He ]immigrated to America to avoid serving in Napoleon Bonaparte’s army. It was then that he began hunting and drawing birds as a hobby. After he married and had many failed business ventures he decided to concentrate more on studying and drawing birds.
So, he headed out into the wild with his art materials, his gun, and an assistant that traveled with him. He traveled the Mississippi River, and drew many sketches and watercolors of the wildlife he encountered. He had a hard time getting his work published in America so he began traveling around the world.
His most famous works The Birds of America was finally published in London. He died died at home on January 27, 1851 and was buried in New York City. He is known as one of the most important naturalists of his era. In 1886, the first bird-preservation society was named after him. Later the National Audubon Society was created in 1905.
