I can honestly say that without a weekly chore routine visually on display in our kitchen, my children wouldn’t do a thing. It isn’t that they are lazy, they just plainly have better things to do and don’t think about it on their own. Just like the Bible says we should train our children in the way they should go, I believe that applies to responsibilities in the home as well.
These FREE printable routine cards for a visual schedule can help you to get a routine going in your home and encourage your children to be accountable for their role in the home.
Structure in routines with a visual schedule
Children really benefit from structure in their lives. They do well with boundaries and find comfort in routines. When I was an early learning teacher I would practice routines with my students for the whole first week of school year. We practiced rules and routines over and over. Soon the children just knew exactly what was coming next in our daily routine.
They knew every morning they had to put their bags away in their cubby, sit on their spot on the carpet, and get ready to sing the ABC song, then do the weather. If I, for some reason, had to change something up in our schedule the kids would NOT hesitate to tell me. It was adorable.
I love all these tools that are available for homeschooling families. When my students came to school they knew things were different; rules were different from their home. When you are homeschooling, you ARE home.
This adds a dynamic to your routine that can be difficult to draw a line between “home” and “homeschool”. No matter if you are setting routines for your home or setting routines you’re your homeschool, each will encourage a positive and comforting environment.
These free printable routine cards for kids even come with blank editable cards so that you can adjust them to add an activity that is specific to your home.
