Copywork ~ What is it REALLY? Until this past year I thought copywork was strictly for handwriting practice. Since my daughter mastered beautiful, cursive handwriting in 1st grade, I never gave it a second thought. In comes Queen Homeschool Supplies.
I was introduced to this Charlotte Mason Style Curriculum by my friend Sarah. It seemed too easy…almost like not “doing” school at all. Then I learned the benefits of copywork, totally not what I had thought!
Charlotte Mason taught that a child learns grammar (capitalization, punctuation, spelling, etc.) best by doing copywork – that is copying over selections from fine literature into a notebook. The child is forced to pay attention to the details of writing, and corrects his work when through, by comparing it to the original (taken from Queenhomeschool.com).
How We Do Copywork
My daughter (seventh grade) copies a selection of text. She has to pay careful attention to detail and copy it EXACTLY as it is. If she messes up even once, I have her re-copy the ENTIRE selection. Let’s say that only happend once or twice, LOL.
We use copywork that goes along with American History, because that is what we are learning this year. You can use copywork from any subject/source: character building copywork, thematic copywork, scripture copywork, historical copywork, basically anything!
Since we have always struggled with spelling in our homeschool, we opted to transition over to Queen Homeschool Supplies’ Spelling through Copywork. We are also using Words of the Week Vocab and I have her copy that too. I have seen a DRAMATIC improvement in her spelling and vocab skills, as well as her attention to detail.
Considering the Language Lessons for the Secondary Child also includes a copywork selection every now and then, she does A LOT of copywork….but she never complains because they are short nuggets.
I love the information on copywork here.

You Can Create Your OWN Copywork Selections
WorksheetWorks.com provides a manuscript & cursive handwriting practice page generator–you type in the text and it comes out as a practice page. Perfect for making your own copywork to go along with what you are learning!
This worksheet generator usees sweeping lines instead of static fonts. This results in natural curves that match how cursive lines are actually written.

Because copywork has been shown to improve not only handwriting, but spelling and grammar, many are seeing amazing benefits from consistently adding copywork into the school week. However, the benefits of memorizing Scripture are useful for building character, a love for God and faith in Him.
The Psalm 91 copywork eBook allows children to obtain all the benefits of copywork and Scripture memory, using one of the most wonderful verses in Scripture of God’s protection and care for us.
This daily copywork eBook takes your child step-by-step through Psalm 91, teaching reading fluency, spelling, grammary, handwriting, writing and the Word of God. By the end of the year, your child will be able to recite and write the entire verse from memory.
Included in the introduction are instructions for using the Charlotte Mason method of copywork and dicatation to improve spelling, grammar and language usage.
