Will you be teaching your homeschool students the long vowel sounds this year? Teaching short vowel sounds can be more straightforward than teaching long vowel sounds. Long vowel sounds can be a little more complex and have a few extra rules for kids to learn.
I really never thought of how complicated the English language was until I moved to another country. I always knew Spanish so that was second nature to me along with English.
I moved to a country where every vowel is pronounced exactly the way it should sound. Mind = blown. It was easier to pronounce the words for me.
However, in speaking with my friends here, they pointed out all the nuances that just didn’t make sense. I agreed with them! Like words that look the same but have different meanings or words that are spelled differently but sound the same.
With long vowels, think for a moment how – a_e, ai, ay, ey – all sound exactly the same. Imagine for a moment that our kids have to “get” this in order to build on vocabulary. That’s tough, so gather these freebies and give as much practice as you can to the kiddos. They will get there.
