It’s one thing to make new goals this time of year and it’s another thing completely to take action on those goals. Do you want to actually make them happen? Then this post is for you! Here are several steps to take if you want to crush your goals this year.
Think in terms of quarters (Dream big but plan small)
First, you will have trouble seeing progress if you make goals with a year-end completion date. Instead, take your big goals and then plan them in terms of quarters. For the first quarter of the year (January through March), what mini goals should you plan in order to work toward your big goal by December?
So, instead of decluttering the entire house (due date: December), divide your house into zones and tackle a zone or two each quarter. This is much more doable, you’ll be motivated by quicker wins, and you will be more likely to hit your big goal (whole house declutter by December) if you work toward quarterly goals.
So, what’s your big goal? Can you break that down into quarters? What should you accomplish each quarter this year in order to reach your final goal? Write it down now or you won’t take action.
Break your big goals into realistic steps
Now, take those quarterly goals, and divide them down into even smaller goals – like monthly and weekly. Most people are overwhelmed because they don’t know where to start in working towards their goals. If you begin the year by breaking down your big goals, then you’ll have the exact tasks before you each week that you need to accomplish in order to meet your goals.
So, take your big goal, and divide it this way:
When you break them down into realistic steps, you’re more likely to take action on your goals.
Schedule a day & time to work on those steps
You can have the best plan ever, but if you don’t take control of your time, then you will still get to the end of the week and wonder why you didn’t move forward toward your goals.
Many of us are stuck in the “putting out fires” daily grind. Every time someone in your life has an urgent issue (not necessarily important) or every time we have an urgent issue (not necessarily moving you toward your goals), we spend most of our day responding to those.
A colleague might have an “emergency” because they didn’t plan ahead on the project, or a volunteer opportunity might need your help at the last minute because someone else fell through, or you didn’t plan ahead for homeschool this week, so you’re running around with your head cut off trying to make copies of everyone’s work.
If you can get into the habit of planning ahead, working ahead, and time blocking, then you can avoid a lot of this kind of reactionary time management.
