My kids love visiting different zoos. They especially love when they can see the animals moving around their habitats. Some of my kids will spend hours at the zoo taking it all in and watching each animal. Of course, they have their favorites, but for the most part, my kids love watching the animals that are out and about the most.
A couple of years ago we moved to a different town and were at least an hour away from any zoo. We traveled to a zoo a couple of times, but it just wasn’t close enough for us to visit more frequently. And because my kids love the zoo so much, we wanted to find a way they could see the animals on a more regular basis without all the travel time.
Enter live animal cams. Several years ago we happened to see a Live Eagle cam of a bald eagle sitting on its eggs in the nest. It was literally one of the most fascinating things to watch. Then earlier this year we watched as April the giraffe give birth LIVE on the animal cam.
It was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever watched. Since we couldn’t be there to watch in person, the LIVE animal cam was the next best thing. From that point on, my kids love to ask me about animal cams and we love to find new ones. Sometimes it takes the place of our science lessons for the day or even week! Plus, we get to “travel” to some pretty exotic places all from the comfort of our computer screen.
Travel around the world and see exotic animals and wildlife, without ever leaving your home, on these LIVE webcams.
Tennessee Aquarium – The Tennessee Aquarium has several LIVE animal cams you can view. The Secret Reef Cam gives you a unique, underwater view of the ocean aquarium. You’ll see stingrays, sharks, fish and much more! if you love those adorable flightless birds, you can also check out their penguin exhibit cam.
Explore.org – I was so happy when I found this site. They have a number of different LIVE animal cams. You can view them by groups – Africa, Birds, Bears, Oceans, and more. Once you click on the group you want, you’ll find several cams to view. I loved all of them!
San Diego Zoo LIVE Cams – Have you ever been to the San Diego Zoo? I remember going in high school and it was one of the highlights of that trip. But if you can’t make the trip, you can still view several of their exhibits via LIVE animal cams. Our favorites were the Ape cam, the Polar Bear cam (if you can catch him outside) and the Koala cam. You can also see LIVE animals cams at their Safari Park with giraffes, elephants, owls, tigers and more!
Smithsonian’s National Zoo – This is another on our list of “want to see” places. I have been to Washington D.C. and seen several of the Smithsonian museums, but not the zoo. I would love to take my kids one day, but in the meantime, we’ll just have to settle for their LIVE cams.
Earth Cam Animal Cams – This site has a ton of fun animal cams from around the world. Some are in zoos or aquariums, while others are out in the wild. If you want to see other sites from around the world, such as the construction of iconic buildings, famous streets or intersections and more, be sure to check out their main site!
Goats Live – Do your kids love goats as much as mine? Maybe mine are just weird, but seriously…they love goats. This LIVE feed shows you just how adorable they are!
LIVE Jellyfish Cam – I have always been fascinated with jellyfish. At least while they are behind glass in an aquarium. Kids will love to watch their fluid movements on this LIVE cam at Vancouver Aquarium. They also have cams for the sea otters and penguins, so be sure to check them out.
Monterey Bay – I love seeing animals swimming underwater. Somehow they just seem so majestic. Years ago I remember going out in a glass-bottom boat on a tour off Catalina Island in California. Honestly, it was a tad bit scary for me. Seeing the kelp below me that seemed to go on endlessly. It was almost like a reverse fear of heights. So now I enjoy looking at all those fish and swimmers through the glass. Check out the Kelp Forest Cam at Monterey Bay Aquarium.
Fruit Bats LIVE Animal Cam – Bats pretty much freak me out, however, I can’t help but find them fascinating. I like that this animal cam lets you view the bats from the safety of your computer screen while watching them fly around and eat. So cool!
Many zoos and aquariums around the world have LIVE animal cams now. This makes it so fun and easy to “visit” without ever leaving your home. Check them out!
