The blank page. It’s one of the most intimidating things in the world, ranking not far from high mountains to climb, government forms, or going to a crowded concert if you’re an introvert like me. But with the right tools, your middle school and high school kids can tackle this challenge with confidence. That’s why we created the Creative Writing Story Steps Writing Guide

Fantasy Bridge in the Sky

The purpose of the Creative Writing Story Steps is to show your students, step by step, how to tackle many different kinds of writing. It’s full of questions they can ask themselves and background information on what is needed to create fiction such as:

  • novels
  • short stories
  • mysteries
  • fables
  • Westerns
  • fantasy
  • science fiction
  • suspense
  • fan fiction

It also includes questions and background information to help them write nonfiction such as a:

  • biography
  • do-it-yourself or self-help book
  • essay

There are detailed pages designed to help fiction writers craft good characters and believable conflict.

The unit concludes with a “Putting It All Together” section. For the fiction author, this includes an explanation of a focused plot, revision ideas, and a template to help them understand their story arc. For the nonfiction author, this includes a template designed to help them write a five-paragraph essay.
