Teaching children how to use proper grammar seems to have dropped by the wayside in the public school system. Our Pastor’s wife is a sixth grade public school teacher (she is a cheerleader for homeschoolers!) and she recently informed me that they NO LONGER TEACH GRAMMAR to children in her district. WHAT?! First cursive writing becomes a lost art and now grammar instruction joins ranks. It’s no wonder why children fail to speak using proper grammar.
I place a huge value on proper word usage and correct grammar. I am often correcting my daughter’s speech and word usage and am “reminded” that we are not “doing school.” For me, that plays no part in my correction of her grammar; I want my children to be intelligent in speech and writing at all times!
We use Easy Grammar in our homeschool and I firmly believe that this is the best homeschool grammar curriculum on the market. My daughters will attest that it really is easy to learn and I too have learned so much teaching it. It’s pretty open & go, and I love that approach!
Sometimes it’s fun to add in some hands-on activities and supplements to help memorize things like the parts of speech or prepositions. This week we have a special free offer brought to you by Real World Learners. Sandra holds a Masters in Teaching and left the public school system to homeschool her children. Her love of teaching birthed Real World Learners where she creates helpful tools and resources homeschoolers and educators love to use with their students.
You can grab this FREE Parts of Speech Grammar Lapbook now through 2/15/19. Children will create a fun lapbook that they can use alongside their grammar lessons to help them master the parts of speech. My daughters have always loved crafts and hands-on activities, although I pretty much hate them. I know “hate” is a strong word, but am am truly anti-crafty and would rather read to them and have them do written narration for any subject. When it comes to science experiments, that is what co-ops are for!
What I like about lapbooking is 1.) I can handle the hands-on aspect of them and 2.) it gives the false impression that I helped them accomplish something “crafty.” Lapbooks are what we start out with before my kids are ready for notebooking. The very first lapbooks we ever used were from Homeschool in the Woods. They’re like lapbooks on steroids that truly made our projects look like I had some skill.
