Help your kids think critically about 18 works depicting scenes from the American Revolution with this FREE Analyzing Historical Art Activity.
A picture may be worth 1,000 words, but do your students know they need to think critically about what is being said? Historical art that shows real events is a form of art that has been around as long as art itself. But every piece of art has an artist, and every artist has his or her own perspective and purpose for creating art.
With this FREE Analyzing Historical Art Activity, students will study paintings by:
- Jean Leon Gerome Ferris
- John Trumbull
- Nathaniel Currier
- Currier and Ives
- Emanuel Leutze
They’ll learn to ask questions about the paintings such as:
- When was the painting made?
- How many years after the event took place was the artwork created?
- Did the artist use any historical records to create the painting?
- How accurate is the painting?
They’ll also learn to brainstorm questions they can ask about details in the painting to help them examine clothing, weather, setting, people present, and more. It’s a fun way to combine history and art in your day and help your students develop critical thinking skills.
