Alphabet Games

Alphabet Games

It is easy for children to just repeat the sounds they are being told. Children can sing the alphabet song with ease, yet not understand what they are saying.

Learning the Alphabet

This is why it is important to associate the alphabet with cognitive learning. Getting familiar with the alphabet is the basic foundation of literacy skills. The alphabet is the building block for identifying words, names, recognizing sounds, and how sounds of letters can come together to make a blended sound.

The earlier parents expose their students to letter identification the more fluent they can become. ABC learning games are one of the best ways to teach young learners to recognize alphabet letters, sounds of the letters then sight words.

Benefits of Teaching Letter Recognition with Games

There are many benefits of teaching letter recognition with games. Learning the alphabet is not just recitation. Parents can expose children to alphabet letters in ways that are a lot of fun.

Hands-On Alphabet Activities

Games provide engaging and hands-on fun activities to learn about the alphabet. Children practice fine and gross motor skills while learning their ABCs and don’t even know just how much they are learning.

More Benefits of Alphabet Games

Besides learning the alphabet, games also help children with language development and problem-solving as they use their communication skills and critical thinking skills. These are just a few reasons games are beneficial for your children to learn the alphabet.

Young children mainly learn through visual, tactile, and hearing activities. While alphabet worksheets are a great way to review and practice what a child has learned, games are the perfect way to keep children involved and remember what they learned.

Magnetic Letter Games

An effective literacy tool we may already have in our home is magnetic letters. It is a staple purchase when you have small children. Put those magnetic letters to good use when your child is learning to read.

Alphabet Magnetic Letters

Here are some ways you can use magnetic letters on a daily basis as early learning literacy activities:

  1. Use a pencil pouch and fill it with magnetic letters. Take it with you on car rides and let your learner make up as many words as they can.
  2. Place all your magnetic letters in a sensory bin. Have your little one search for CVC words and place them on your whiteboard or refrigerator when they are finished.
  3. Grab a cookie sheet and draw a T-chart. Put magnetic letters in a bowl so your child can place which letters are in their name on one side and other letters on the other side of the t-chart.
  4. On a cookie sheet write all the letters in the alphabet (mixed around the whole page). Task your young learner to match up the magnetic letters with the corresponding letters on the cookie sheet.
  5. Have an early learning spelling quiz. Review the CVC words your students have in their word bank. Recite a CVC word at a time and take your early learner to find the magnetic letters to spell the CVC word.
  6. Of course, there is always the challenge of putting all the magnetic letters in ABC order, time the activity to make it fun.
