Refresh Your Home with Small Changes

This time of year is the perfect time for a fresh start inside the four walls of your home.

The first step to refresh a space is always decluttering. Now, this is not always a fun process, but decluttering is the easiest way to make the biggest impact. Plus, once you learn easy ways to lose the clutter then you’ll be able to refresh the space more easily.

Organizing Your Home

Once you have a clean slate, you can move onto organization. Reorganizing a space is an easy way to refresh. An organized home that helps you be able to efficiently meet your homeschooling and homemaking goals will bring more peace. Marie Kondo’s organizational tips really do help families tidy up their space. Strategies like learning to fold and store clothes in an upright position are lifechanging!

Simple Ways to Decorate

Next, consider other small changes like bringing in more indoor plants or fresh flowers. Create a new focal point in a room with updated photos, throw pillows, or a new rug. Paint your front door a new fresh color. Rearrange the items on your coffee table for a new season. All of these ideas are simple, don’t have to cost a lot of money, and can be done in a weekend. But these small changes can refresh your home in a big way!

Wall Art

Small things that can give you a nice refresh with little time or hardly any investment is to change out your wall art. It’s a good idea to take some time to print new family photos and make them into a piece of artwork for your home. If you don’t have a lot of time to invest in design ideas, then do small things like rearrange the fireplace mantel, add new throw blankets to the couch, or use nature to bring in a fresh look to small spaces.

Don’t neglect the outside of your home! Even if you don’t have a green thumb, you can make a huge difference to your curb appeal by updating your shrubs or plants at the front of your home.

Refresh Your Home with Large Changes

What if you have the time or money to make some big changes? Then do it! Here are some ideas to get you started.

A gallery wall or accent wall can make a big statement and refresh a large or small room. Depending on your decorating style, a gallery wall can include things like family photos, kids’ artwork, baskets, antique signs, maps, vintage botany posters, and mirrors. Really, anything that is similar and is grouped together on a wall can make a great accent or gallery. You could even create a homeschool gallery wall in your home where you rotate through artwork your kids have made, beautiful educational posters, or other intriguing prints.

Window Treatments

Another large change that will refresh your home is to switch out the window treatments. A new look at the windows will make a big difference! And it doesn’t necessarily have to cost a lot of money. Sometimes less is more and you can just let the sunshine in without having curtains on every window.

The natural light will do wonders for updating your room feel. Other times, depending on your home design and style, you can think outside the box and use fabric like drop cloths and other inexpensive items to decorate your windows. Switching out heavy drapes for sheer curtains will give you so much light that you’ll wonder why you didn’t make the change sooner.

Declutter Your Kitchen

What about the kitchen? You might find that decluttering was all that was needed. But if you want to take this idea of a refresh one step further, you can totally change the look of your kitchen with a coat of paint on the kitchen cabinets. It can sound scary to commit to such a project, but the result can be amazing. Instead of pouring thousands of dollars into new cabinets, if yours are already a good quality cabinet, then just painting the fronts will refresh your kitchen. You can also change out the knobs or pulls for a stunning effect.

Change out Light Fixtures

New light fixtures will help to refresh and update the look of your home. Consider purchasing from a Habitat for Humanity Restore or other recycling area in order to find quality fixtures at a cheaper price. You can even update older fixtures with a new color by taking them apart and use spray paint on the fixture.

You’d be amazed that this inexpensive idea can make it look like you purchased all new fixtures for your home. It’s definitely a cheap way to refresh the look of your space. You can also use spray paint on your existing door handles to update the look. Just be sure to totally remove them from the door first and spray in a well-ventilated area, preferably outside. This will give you the look of new hardware with minimal expense.

Refresh the Walls with Paint

Consider a fresh coat of paint to introduce a new color to your home. You don’t have to repaint every room. Just start small. Maybe a bathroom needs a refresh. Because bathrooms are usually a smaller space than the rest of the house, it can be a good place to start with a new color.

New (to You) Furniture Pieces

Finally, adding a new piece of furniture is a big change that can have a big impact. But you don’t necessarily need to buy a brand-new item! Visit your local thrift stores, look online for estate sales or moving sales, and you can score a high-quality piece of furniture for a fraction of the price of a new piece. Even if you don’t like the finish, you can always repaint it to fit your style. If you’re brave, consider repainting a thrifted piece of furniture with a great pop of color.

Rearrange Your Furniture

Sometimes making a plan to reconfigure your furniture layout is all you need in order to refresh your home. This will have the biggest impact in a room like your living room or a bedroom. It’s a great excuse to declutter, paint, and reorganize the entire room if you’re changing up the whole layout anyway.

In Conclusion

These are just some of the ways you can bring some new life into your home. Whether you love the idea of redecorating or doubt your home design skills, just choose a couple ideas to give your home a fresh start this month. Remember, refreshing your home doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. Just make it into a cozy space where your family wants to gather. And remember that the people in your home matter more than the design.
