We teach our kids the fruit of the Spirit in hopes that they bear good fruit. But, we don’t tell them how to do this.

It’s easy to think that if we just work a little harder to love, be kind, patient, etc. we’ll be bearing good fruit. But here’s the thing… fruit doesn’t work hard to grow. It grows as a result of staying attached.

Abiding In Jesus

You see, the fruit of the Holy Spirit is produced as a result of spending time with Jesus, abiding and remaining in Him. He is the vine. Of ourselves, we cannot produce the fruit of the Spirit.

By getting to know Jesus more and more, we learn that we can employ love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and self-control because the power of the Holy Spirit is at work within us.

What we need to teach our kids is that a relationship with Jesus is the highest priority. Reading the Bible is the first and foremost way to developing in this relationship. We get to know the attributes of our Heavenly Father, His desires, His will, how Jesus loves us and the power He’s given to us through the Holy Spirit who leads us into all Truth and shows us things to come.

Producing The Fruit Of The Spirit

How are you teaching the fruit of the Spirit to your kids? Saying the fruits of the Spirit is a great first way to get going. Memorizing scripture is one of our favourite ways to learn the Bible. Now it’s time to grow in the Word and learn how to produce the fruit. Again, fruit doesn’t strive to grow; it’s a by-product of remaining attached.
