Celebrating Mother’s Day with your family should be a special time to appreciate and show the moms in your life that you care for them. These free & cheap ways you can bless the moms in your life will give you ideas to make moms feel special.
Look, I understand that this may not mean much to some of you. However, I am a celebrating person. I like to be celebrated because I have been through some chaos in life as a mom and as a wife.
Being a mom can be a thankless job at times. It shouldn’t take a specific day for us to feel appreciated but it happens, and that is OK. We don’t go into being a mom thinking, “I will get praise for this.”
We go into motherhood knowing we will sacrifice, knowing we will have to put ourselves aside, and knowing it will be a challenge at times – to say the least.
Yet, we step in our warrior boots and get the job done, and hopefully, we get some hugs and kisses along the way.
What moms do . . .
Proverbs 31:25 (ESV), ” Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come.”
Right now, as we speak, I am with my mother-in-law in a completely different country getting medical treatment for her.
Living on a small island, the medical options we can provide our people are limited. So when patients need necessary medical care, sometimes they are sent to a neighboring country to get the treatment, then return.
Since I work from home, I was asked to go with her. My husband is holding down the fort back home.
My husband calls me daily to tell me how much he appreciates what I do at home. When we video-call each other, I can see my home is literally a WRECK.
I am sure he will get it together before I get home, but he is keeping the kids alive and fed, so I am thankful.
Sometimes, it takes something like this for your family to realize just how much you do. It happens. We don’t tackle being a mom with the intent of getting trophies.
Now, my mother-in-law is needing her childrens’ help. Although her son could not go with her, he married an awesome chick who could go in his stead.
ME, of course.
See, I also see what his mother has done for them and does for my children. It truly is a complete difference from what I experienced on my side of the family.
Some moms deserve appreciation for being your birth givers at the very least. Other moms deserve appreciation for so much more.
My mother-in-law is definitely worth celebrating for it all. So, I organized surprises for her throughout the day and took her to dinner with money contributed from her children.
Sometimes these types of surprises, presents, and dinner outings just aren’t feasible. We may be at a point where we can’t dish out the cash to do extravagant things for our moms.
The truth is that moms don’t always expect or even want extravagance. Moms want appreciation and time and just to know they are loved.
And that, my friends, does not require lots of money at all.
Explore these free & cheap ways you can bless the moms in your life:
Take a load off of her.
Cook dinner, do the dishes, or run to the grocery store for her. Make and bring her a cup of joe or tea.
There is no doubt moms have a long to-do list. Helper her out without being asked to. THAT is a win/win.
Create a bouquet.
Of course you can buy flowers, but why not collect and pick some fresh flowers from nature and place them in a vase for her?
If mom notices flowers on walks or on drives home, then you know this will be a hit for her.
Write thank-you notes.
Some of us moms are used to placing love you notes in our kid’s notebooks or around the house for our families.
So getting thank-you notes, we probably can all agree, just melt the heart.
Help her cross something off her bucket list or do something she needs.
Many times our moms ask for things or mention they would enjoy something but we brush it off or don’t take the time to do it.
Visit a local museum or help her plant a garden. Maybe help her clean out that closet that hasn’t been touched for years or bury a time capsule for the kids/grandkids.
More often than not, the time you give is what she really needs/wants.

Now… these are lifelong ways to bless your mom.
Study God’s Word with her.
Pick a Bible study plan and go through it with her either on the phone daily or weekly. I had a precious friend named Cynthis who was like a motherly figure to me but better yet, a sister in Christ.
She spent years walking with me toward Christ. So, when she became ill and was bedridden, I went to her once a week and we would read God’s Word as I sat at the foot of her bed.
These were some of the most precious times we spent together.
Reading God’s Word with someone forms an incredible bond when the readers are both Christian.
Philippians 1:2 (ESV) says, “So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.”
When believers read together they are encouraged and comforted and so much more. Read God’s Word with your moms.

Pray with your mothers.
Jesus commanded us to pray (John 14:13-14). It wasn’t to just get what we want. We pray with others to get to know our Savior more and to get closer to God. We also pray with others to get to know them and their needs more deeply.
When you pray with your mom, it builds upon the horizontal relationship you already have and forms a bond toward a vertical relationship with our God.
Whatever different ways you chose to bless your mom, remember and teach your kids about this Scripture:
Exodus 20:12, “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.”
As you are mothering, remember this Bible verse for yourself so that you indeed will continue to be a mom worth celebrating:
Proverbs 31:26 ESV), “She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.”
