Every year, on the 25th April, Australia and New Zealand hold a national day of remembrance known as Anzac Day. This day commemorates the soldiers who served and died at Gallipoli during World War I. Normally, this day starts with Dawn Services and marches, though with the current world events these haven’t been allowed to go ahead. Instead, people across the country join in a Driveway Dawn Service, where they stand at the end of their driveway to commemorate with their fellow citizens.
In 1915, the Anzacs, an acronym for the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, took part in a campaign to capture the Gallipoli Peninsula. Landing in Anzac Cove on the 25th April , 1915, the battle of Gallipoli lasted eight months, before the Allied forces began to evacuate. Learn more with the following Anzac Day Activities.
