We are very protective of what our children watch and “follow” as they play with friends. Dragons are one that can go either way. We don’t approve of the scary, fire-breathing dragons, but we do allow a certain amount of the fun, mythological creatures. Appreciate a Dragon Day is coming up on January 16th, so be sure to check out some of these resources and printables about dragons!
My kids love the fun “How to Train Your Dragon” series, movies and show. It is a great adventure series that even our younger kids enjoy. I feel like the cartoon-nature of it makes it less scary, as well as the humor and kindness they put into the film changes your perspective of dragons. So whether you’re studying the Middle Ages, mythology, or your kids just like dragons, here are some facts you might find interesting.
Origin of the word “dragon”
To find the origin of the word dragon, you need to go all the way back to the Ancient Greek word, drákōn meaning “serpent, giant seafish”. That led to the Latin word, draconem meaning “huge serpent, dragon”, which led to the Old French dragon, which eventually entered the English language in the 13th century as dragon. Even though dragons appear in a variety of cultures around the world, the exact origin is still debated. (Wikipedia)
Dragons in the Bible
In Ancient times, the word dragon referred to a serpent that had long range eye sight, being able to see their prey from far away. The Bible talks about a great serpent, or dragon, throughout Revelation. The dragon described in Revelation is most likely the huge serpent, also referred to in Genesis 3:3, and another name for Satan.
