Kindness is something we as parents want our children to learn. The Lord instructs us to “Be kind and compassionate to one another” (Eph 4:32a), which is what we continue to teach our children. Yes, it can feel good to do something nice for someone else but we shouldn’t do it to pat ourselves on the back, or only for those who are nice to us. As I tell my kids, it isn’t always easy to be kind to others, especially when they are not being nice to you.
We are to shine God’s love into the world by our actions not just our words! That’s why I think World Kindness Day (November 13th) is the perfect starting point. Of course, we should always act with kindness but maybe take the day to get out and let your kids tangibly show God’s Love to others on the 13th.
I know that I try to show kindness to all people – regardless of our differences. But sometimes our kids need a little guidance and push to know how. Random Acts of Kindness (or R.A.K.) took off a few years back with many churches heading out into the city to deliver water bottles on a super hot day with a special church wrapper attached.
Many families choose to bake homemade goodies for the holidays to deliver to neighbors – even those they’ve never met! This is a great way to meet your neighbors and spread kindness while showing God’s Love.
There are so many different ways to show kindness to others. Use some of these Random Acts of Kindness ideas or create your own to share on World Kindness Day, November 13th.
