If you aren’t a homeschooler, you may not know the difference between a craft and handicraft. If you do know the difference, then ignore my statement. It sounded good at the moment. This list of budget-friendly handicrafts will make a great addition to your homeschool lessons.

Budget-Friendly Handicrafts

hand·i·craft

/ˈhandēˌkraft/

Noun

  1. A particular skill of making decorative objects by hand/homemade.
  2. An object that is made using a skill by hand.

Here is the way I see it.

Crafts can provide hands-on practice for kids and can encourage creativity in your homeschool. Handicrafts are creations.

When you think of crafting in your homeschool, it may include art supplies like scissors, glue, paper, and go along great alongside your lessons to help kids internalize what they are learning.

Handicrafts take crafting a whole leap further. It is a type of craft kids can make by hand that can also be decorative and have a particular use.

Many times handy crafts have a traditional, cultural, or religious value of some sort – but they don’t have to be. When it comes to your homeschool, handicrafts are cool things kids can use or gift to other people.

I live in a second world country where handicrafts are the sole source of income for many families. Many women make handicrafts to sell in stores and/or during tourist season to support their families.

Now that I think about it, can you help me say a little prayer for them during your prayer time or when you think of it?

See, due to the issues around the world right now, our borders are completely closed to any visitors. It has been eight months that our borders have been closed, therefore no handicrafts are being sold.

It hit me this week when I went to buy a Tongan tapa cloth frame for my friend, who is still stuck in Australia until our borders are open again.

I wanted to frame a picture I saw on the internet of her and her girls as a surprise when she returned home, and the biggest handicraft store we have here in Tonga was closed until further notice.

I was so sad to hear about this. Many handicraftsmen from all over the island and surrounding islands brought their crafts to be sold there. And it was just closed indefinitely.

What a world we live in now. Anyway, if you could shoot a prayer their way that would be amazing.

I wanted to show you some pictures of the traditional handicrafts from Tonga, where I live now.

Handicrafts don’t have to be elaborate in your homeschool. Yet, they can be used to encourage creativity, authenticity, design, but most of all to make alongside your lessons If you are studying countries around the world.

Here is the best thing about handicrafts, they can actually have good use and they can be really budget-friendly.

Handicrafts have a sentimental value, I think many of our fellow homeschool parents can agree. Of course, its awesome for our kids to make paper crafts, but there is just something about handicrafts where we can save as a keepsake that makes it special and memorable.

Being budget-friendly is only the icing on the cake.
