I love the idea of teaching our kids about unique and exotic places around the world. From stories of Cleopatra and the animated movie Prince of Egypt to hieroglyphics and pyramids, your students will surely be interested in finding out more about this country.
Learning about countries and geography can be really fun if we think outside of the box. It would be a shame to teach your kids about Egypt with solely texts or worksheets. Explore these resources for learning about Egypt to create a unit that will take your students through a journey to Egypt from home.

3. Watch videos and/or movies all about Egypt.
My son is a visual learner. I usually teach him about a subject and lesson but he thrives on watching videos about what he has learned. He absorbs the information better when watching it.
Of course, I would rather him not watch videos but if it works for him than I will keep using the tools available to me. Incorporate some videos and movies to help your visual learners with their lessons.

4. Teach your kids about the ancient Egyptian writing system of hieroglyphics.
So, it turns out that hieroglyphics were (are) one of the hardest mysteries for people to uncover about Egypt. Although it looked like the symbols represented letters or even words, they actually represented so much more.
The Egyptian writing system of hieroglyphs is pretty complex. The symbols represent words, sounds, syllables, or even a concept. The hieroglyphs themselves can be creatures, objects, or just plain symbols.
Use the resources below to help you teach all about hieroglyphs and even task your kids to spell their names out in them.

7. Read about fun facts.
Well, what is a country unit study without exploring cool and fun facts about something in that region! My kids love learning weird, quirky, or interesting information about countries they are studying.
Here are a few weird and interesting facts about Egypt and it’s culture:
- Most of us know the ancient Egyptians loved cats, but did you know that they loved them so much that if their cat died they would shave off their eyebrows to mourn it?
- OK, here’s one more about cats. Anyone who killed a cat would be sentenced to death.
- Mummification takes over two months from start to finish.
- Poor people were buried in sand while only the rich could be mummies.
- We have all seen the famous pictures of pyramids but did you know that all pyramids are the special tombs used to bury the Pharaohs and their family members?
- Egypt has 130 pyramids found so far. The tallest pyramid is the Great Pyramid in Giza which is as tall as the Washington Monument in Washington D.C.
- The Nile River in Egypt is the longest river in the whole world.
- King Tut became a ruler when he was only 8 or 9 years old.

8. Lastly, God’s Word incorporated into studies is always a WIN!
We understand how important Egypt was in the context of God’s word and plan. Its mention over 700 times in the Old Testament and 25 times in the New Testament. It was both a land of refuge and a land of bondage for its people.
It was the setting where your students would have learned about Moses, Joseph, Noah, the Exodus, and more. The Lord has left us with this declaration in Isaiah 19:25:
“Blessed be Egypt my people, and Assyria the work of my hands, and Israel my inheritance.”
