The Sun and the Moon are many times associated with the other because they were made that way. God made one in response to the other and they both affect the Earth in important ways.

Here are some associations between the sun and moon that are important for our kids to know.

Created on the same day

The most amazing thing of all about the sun and the moon is that they were created by God. They also so happen to be created on the same day – Day 4.

Genesis 1:14-19 (ESV): “And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, [a] and for days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so. And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth,  to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.” – emphasis mine.

They are connected

God created the cycle of day and night to be a full day. The sun is the primary source of light while the moon reflects the light of the sun. Without the sun emitting its own light and energy, we wouldn’t see any light at night. The moon cannot emit light on its own.

Measure time

The sun and moon serve as the basis for measurements in time. The moon is the Earth’s basis of the month on modern calendars like a natural satellite. It takes 27.3 days for the moon to fully rotate around the earth.

The Earth orbits around the sun forming the calendar year and day. The sun rotates on its axis once in about 27 days.

They affect the earth perfectly

The sun is the source that feeds life on Earth. It heats up our atmosphere, helps plants grow, and more. The moon affects ocean tides because the Earth gravitational pull is stronger nearer the moon. When the Earth rotates (faster than the moon) it causes bulges that form the tides.

Additionally, when our Earth is in between the Earth and the moon it forms the amazing phenomenon of a lunar eclipse.
