With the extraordinary circumstances surrounding our world today, the significance of diseases and our immune system becomes increasingly interesting. These free resources for learning about diseases and the immune system will help your child’s understanding behind the precautions around staying healthy.
Relationship between our immune system and diseases.
I was always interested in the relationship between our immunity and building antibodies with the diseases we may be exposed to.
In the U.S. Navy, I once ran a one-person (me) Immunization Clinic. I knew that the vaccines I had to give people had live viruses, making people immune to the disease they were trying to prevent
It all was fascinating to me.
Then I hear that letting kids get dirty and be in the dirt exposes them to germs that help build their immune system.
Flu shots are new every year because people build immunity to them, so every year needs a new “mixture.”
So, is this all true?
What parts of this do we need to teach our kids? What should our kids know about diseases and our immune system?
Here are a few basics about our immune system and diseases that our kids should know at the very least:
The immune system helps protect us against diseases that are caused by pathogens. These pathogens are what we know as parasites, bacteria, and viruses.
Organs, cells, and tissues all work together to fight and destroy the pathogens.
Your body’s main organs that have to do with the immune system include the lymph nodes, the thymus, bone marrow, and spleen.
We have disease-fighting cells that are house din our immune system throughout our bodies just waiting to be called upon to fight their battle.
Antibodies are proteins produced that trigger an immune response by antigens. These antibodies are specifically designed to attack the ”bad” cells and ignore the good ones.
Our immune system is pretty amazing. It adapts to new infections. Whenever our bodies are exposed to a new disease, the immune system learns how to fight it.
The next time that disease comes around, our bodies are ready and produce antibodies to prevent infection. This can be done naturally or with vaccines.
Not all infections are diseases because some infections don’t affect the person or make them sick.
Over 160,000 people die in the United States of infectious diseases each year – this is aside from what’s going on in our world right now.
