Talking about modern history can be hard. So much of it is difficult, and even painful, to explore. But it’s important to learn about and try to understand all parts of history so we can be prepared for the future. This FREE Modern History Activities and Notebooking: 1990s unit can help you and your family look at five key events.

This FREE Modern History Activities and Notebooking unit can help you and your kids explore five key U.S. and world events from the 1990s. It will introduce them to:

  • the U.S. presidential election of 1992
  • the World Trade Center bombing of 1993
  • the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway (1994)
  • the U.S. presidential election of 1996
  • the Columbine school shooting (1999)

Parents, due to the violent nature of the World Trade Center bombing and the Columbine school shooting, please use your discretion in determining what events you want your students to learn more about and also what resources they use to research the information, as some could contain graphic material.

Each one of these events is introduced and studied by means of a puzzle or activity. When completed, these activities give students an overview of what happened. After each event is introduced, notebooking questions are included to help the student dig deeper and learn more about the event. The unit concludes with a crossword puzzle of facts from the events, and answer keys for the puzzles are included.

You can use these units for more than just history lessons, however. You can also use them to help your students develop and sharpen their independent research skills. You can even have them note the sources they use, a skill they’ll need for future writing projects. Be sure to grab all the FREE Modern History Activities and Notebooking units
