A biblical teaching opportunity with extreme weather events.
We can take this opportunity to teach our children about the comfort that lies in God’s plan, regardless of the turmoil going on throughout the globe. As Christians, we should understand and teach our kids to understand, that God is control of all things – and even some things he allows to happen.
Although we may not know precisely why these severe events have to happen, besides the scientific cause, we can rest assured that God has ordained them all.
Teaching our children about God’s sovereignty is essential when they ask why such things like extreme weather events happen. Sometimes parents can get stumped explaining them, especially when lives are lost. We don’t have to be afraid or avoid these tough questions.
Here are some scriptures that will help you explain God’s sovereignty when it comes to scary weather.
These Bible verses on weather also make great memory verses and copywork throughout your extreme weather lessons.
Exodus 9:29 – Moses said to him, “As soon as I have gone out of the city, I will stretch out my hands to the Lord. The thunder will cease, and there will be no more hail, so that you may know that the earth is the Lord’s.
Psalm 135:6–7 – Whatever the Lord pleases, he does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps. He is who makes the clouds rise at the end of the earth, who makes lightning for the rain and brings forth the wind from his storehouses.
Hebrews 1:3 – He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.
Psalm 18:14 – And he sent out his arrows and scattered them; he flashed forth lightning and routed them.
Jeremiah 10:13 – When he utters his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and he makes the mist rise from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning for the rain, and he brings forth the wind from his storehouses.

During the cyclones we went through, my husband, I, and the kids weren’t too worried. Our little family understood God’s perfect will. These scary times remind us of the necessity for us to teach our kids about the comfort that salvation holds.
Instead of dreading the storms (even in the storms of life), we can take a moment to find joy in them. We can appreciate the Lord’s magnificence, power, and love that he shows over and over again. With every storm we endure, He provides us chance after chance to know him. Let these extreme weather events teach our kids just that.
