I heard this absolutely beautiful worship song recently. It says, “Everything lives where the river runs.” I probably have listened to it a good twenty times just this week. Sometimes in life, we can feel parched. Amen?

There is no way I could separate what a river is in creation with what it represents in the Bible. Before we get into learning about rivers and lakes for our kids, I wanted to take a moment to remind you of what it means to us as believers.

Streams of water are symbolic in God’s Word, often referring to eternal life.

In Isaiah 12:3, it says with joy. You will draw water from the wells of salvation.

In Jeremiah 2:13, Jeremiah rebuked the Israelites for committing two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water.

John 4, explains how Jesus purposefully stops for the woman at the well to take from Him the water of (eternal) life so she will never thirst again (spiritual).

In John 7:38, Jesus tells us those who believe in him will have streams of living water flowing from them.

With these verses, I want to challenge you to remember the joy He has set before us in eternal life, as in Isaiah 12:3.

Heed the warning of Jeremiah 2:13, and stop trying to fight your battles yourself or look to the world for answers (with your own cistern).

Stop trying to do it yourself, use worldly things to quench your thirst, or wait until you are better to give it all to Christ. He will meet us where we are like Jesus did the Samaritan woman at the well in John 4. Only in him and turning toward him, can we be fulfilled.

Just like we need physical water to sustain us in the flesh, so do we need His word to renew and refresh us as in John 7:38. If the rivers of living water aren’t flowing from you, then go to him, and drink! Get in your word and pray.

I really needed some encouragement and truth this week. I thought maybe someone else out there might need some as well. This short lesson on John 7:37 – 39 helped me.

There are pretty interesting things to learn about rivers and lakes.

Rivers are actually a really important part of the water cycle. They act as drainage systems for the Earth’s land surface. They carry water, moisture, and all types of nutrients to provide food and drink for many animals.

Humans also need rivers as they provide us with transportation routes for exploration and restoration. All this makes them prime learning resources for kids.

Wonder why we should study rivers with lakes?

Rainfall flows down hills and gathers in areas called watersheds. These watersheds or valleys form little streams that form rivers. Rivers run into lakes (and oceans).

Clouds over the lakes (and oceans) collect water, which moves over the land to give it rain. Both rivers and lakes are essential to the water cycle.

If you look at an aerial photo of the Earth, you would see that it may seem as if it has arteries running through it. Those are the rivers that connect the lands to lakes and the oceans, allowing for the circulation of nutrients, sediments, and living creatures throughout the planet. It is pretty amazing!
