If your kids are like mine, they probably picked up shapes easier than colors and numbers. In fact, my 3-year-old loves identifying shapes and letters, but he still struggles with colors. Of course, I can’t tell if that’s because he just likes the color blue or he just likes to say the word, but everything is still blue right now.
My older kids do really well with the shape portion of their math lessons and I think it is directly related to them recognizing and learning shapes early. In fact, my oldest is breezing through Geometry right now after just finishing Algebra in one semester.
We teach organically during the preschool years. While we use printables on occasion, most of their learning comes through playing and interacting with us (parents and siblings) and life around them. For instance, we teach them shapes by asking them to bring us the circle plate, or the square box. Sometimes we even add in the color to give them more of a challenge.
Learning through play is not only fun, but it’s also stress-free! There’s no real planning for the parent/teacher and the child sees that they can learn in everyday life. I’ve also found that when they see that learning is all around them, they respond so much better to it as they get older.
