I really don’t like tricks when it comes to mathematics. Math is complicated enough without us learning “tricks” to teach our kids. Although shortcuts do have their place, real-life scenarios are always best. These worksheets to teach ratios and proportions will provide your homeschool kids with all the practice they need to learn.

Enhancing numerical ability in kids helps develop skills they can use for a lifetime. Ratios and proportions are literally skills they will be using with many areas in life. Memorizing steps to follow to learn ratio and proportion won’t yield lasting knowledge. Practice and logic are crucial for kids to retain information.

Our kids need to understand that logically, this is a skill they will need to use often in everyday life.

We will use it when we are talking about speed, for example, 50 miles per hour. We use it in unit prices in the grocery store like $1.50 per pound of fruit or veggies, when they are getting gas, if measuring fabric, and so much more.

Basically, when two quantities of an item both change at simultaneous rates, your kids will be computing ratio and proportions. Understanding this basic idea can help children astronomically rather than teaching that there are steps they need to follow.

I think learning the concept behind ratios and proportions is the foundation for explaining the steps. We can definitely teach our kids cross-multiplying to get proportions and ratios, as it is an excellent trick or shortcut to an answer. Kudos for shortcuts!

Yet, these tricks won’t help kids understand when and where they need to use the process, what is being compared, and why we are doing it.

For instance, this was explained in an experiment published in 2007 by Robert Adjiage, and Francois Pluvinage called An Experiment in Teaching Ratio and Proportion.

It was a two-year experiment with two grade levels, Grade 6 and Grade 7 classes. One class’s learning environment was strictly a paper-pencil model. At the same time, the other was a full experiment class based on a framework for ratio and proportions; this class explained the complexities of the problems.

Of course, the full experiment class gained a better understanding and use for solving usual proportionality problems.

So, remember to teach arninkids the real-life purpose of leg ratio and proportions. Give many practical examples. They are almost guaranteed to internalize the information more effectively.

Use these worksheets to teach ratios and proportions to put into practice what they have learned.

For most kids, it is hugely beneficial to teach them why math problems are necessary. The purpose of the need to do these problems becomes real to them. When in other circumstances kids are just “doing” math, the way you teach is honing in on practical life skills where math actually helps them.
