The rainforest is my favorite biome because it’s where COFFEE comes from. Oh, yeah, and the animals are pretty cool too. Animals of the rain forest (also written rainforest) are gorgeous and worth studying with your kids – with a cup of coffee.

It is said that rainforests are called the lungs of the planet. If you can guess, it’s because they have a huge role in absorbing carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, and producing oxygen. As if rainforest couldn’t get any more useful, they also are known to stabilize climate while housing amazing plant life and animals and rainforests make most spectacular rainfalls you will ever see.

When you think of the rainforest, what do you think about it? There is no other biome with such color. I think of color when thinking of the rainforest, I think of monkeys calling to each other, the rain pitter-patter, the rainfalls gushing down and the beauty of plants that defy reality.

When kids think about the rainforest, they may think of the movie Rio, which I am grateful for. I love that with an animated film, we could teach our kids about the biomes and animals from it. We can build on our child’s interests and run with it.

There is a rainforest where I live; it is extremely small, but it is such a beautiful site to see. I can’t even imagine the beauty of the Amazon. The next best thing is to teach our kids all about it and maybe even do some virtual tours to learn more about the rainforest and its inhabitants.

The rainforest biome is so unique and interesting. For instance, you would find animals living in actual plants, and plants that don’t even need soil to grow. How cool is that?

Here are some more interesting tidbits about the rainforest that caught our eye:

  • You wouldn’t believe that about half of ALL animal and plant species live in the rainforest, yet rainforests only take up 6% of the Earth’s land surface.
  • There is such an animal called a strawberry poison dart frog, and it likes to fight other strawberry poison dart frogs.
  • There are indigenous people in New Guinea called the Korowai people who live in treehouses 45 meters/147 feet high!
  • Most animals in the rainforest either fly or glide.
  • I live close to Australia, and this one is crazy. 80% of the flowers in the Australian rainforests cannot be found in any other place on Earth.

The rainforest was by far the most interested my kids got when it came to our studies on biomes. What they really enjoyed was learning about animals. My kids love animals and their exotic looks and unique ways keep them in awe of God’s work of art.

Some people may think of spiders or creepy crawlies when it comes to rainforests. That is completely legitimate, but the rainforest is also undeniably one of the most amazing sites you will ever see. God is amazing and perfect in His creation.
