My daughter wants to be a marine biologist. I don’t have the slightest idea what that career entails, but I do know it has to do with oceans and everything in them. I figured I needed to teach my kids about water, especially if my daughter might be spending her career around huge bodies of them. After all, we are ALL completely surrounded by it.

We live on an island in the South Pacific and if you haven’t guessed it yet, my kids LOVE the water and could stay in the ocean all day long. I am glad I get to teach them about the water cycle soon since they can relate to it in the context of where we live. I share below some printables we will be using all about the water cycle next year.

Printables All About the Water Cycle

Water is the absolute most common element on the entire Earth, covering 2/3 of our planet’s surface. Water literally supports all forms of life on the planet, including US. As a matter of fact, check out how amazing God is! Water makes up 2/3 of all bodies of water AND our own bodies too!

Water is super important, and I didn’t really pay much mind to it until I didn’t have it. Last year, the island where I live was hit by a Category 4 Cyclone. We were without electricity for several weeks and had to take showers outside with a hose… for six weeks.

You just learn to appreciate the little things and water is one of those things that you realize you can’t live without or take great showers without. I totally plan on sprinkling in a reminder of our experience with the Cyclone throughout our lessons.

We use so much water daily, it really makes you wonder how it doesn’t eventually run out. That is completely because of the water cycle! The water cycle is the continuous process that connects all types of water joining all of the Earth’s oceans, land, and atmosphere – in some form or other.

Teaching about the water cycle can be as fun or as dull as you make it. Thankfully there are some ways we can teach science that gets kids interested and engaged. I can’t wait to tell my kids this cool fact about the water cycle:

There is no new water being made. Water is actually recycled. Like the water we have on Earth now is the water used by the dinosaurs, came from a river in China, had a shark swimming through it hundreds of years ago or even more amazing — may be water that Jesus and his disciples drank from.

I am pretty sure kids will think that’s pretty cool. If you are looking for simple science resources to go along with your water cycle lessons, then look no further.

When the sun warms the surface of the oceans and fresh bodies of water, the water evaporates to form a vapor. That vapor rises to the atmosphere and condenses to form clouds. Those clouds fall back on the Earth’s ground as precipitation. Ice and snow also play a part in the water cycle in something called sublimation.

These are somewhat hard concepts to talk about. With the help of printables, visual aids, and hands-on experiments, you can show your kids what you mean by a water cycle. Use these printables to help you teach all about the water cycle in your homeschool and get kids excited about where our water comes from and goes.
