We have all heard of the age-old saying about lemons. When life hands you lemons, make lemonade. What a great saying about making the best of our situations and being faced with difficulty and turning it into a positive. Attention deficit is a diagnosis often seen as troublesome, but we can learn how attention deficit is an asset.
I love the idea of shifting attention deficit from a negative into a positive that benefits a child with ADHD. There are so many things about our ADHD kids that are completely positive. I am glad to hear about people having the outlook and discussions about using the disorder in a progressive way instead of seeing it as something to suppress.
When my son was in kindergarten, his teacher took me aside and explained that if I left him I public school teachers may try to recommend him to be on medication. She explained that once a teacher suggests your child get evaluated for ADHD, they can bring charges against you if you don’t get your child on medicine.
I couldn’t believe it but the way public systems are going in telling you how to raise children, I wouldn’t doubt that this was true. She gave me some tips on how to manage his attention deficit. She suggested dietary restrictions and getting enough sleep. The tips were amazing, yet, he still has signs of attention deficit. Learning how that can be seen as an asset instead of a burden or nuisance is exactly what parents like me need to make some lemonade.
