For many families the new school year is approaching quickly. Do your children look forward to the first day of school or do they see it as an end to their summer freedom?
Help them look a little more forward to starting school again by establishing some first day of school traditions. Here is a list of possible ideas, choose something or come up with your own ideas to make your first day of school a special memory for your family:
Pack a picnic lunch together and enjoy it in your backyard or at a fun destination. After a few hours of school, everyone will be excited to get back outside. Invite some fellow homeschool friends to join you for even more fun.
Take first day of school pics. Your kids might not look forward to them, but you’ll want to be able to look back on them. There are ways to make back to school pics more fun:
- Go somewhere like a park or a trail to take pictures.
- Let your kids be goofy and creative with the pictures.
- Recreate one of the pictures each year and compare it to past years.
Go to Lunch
If your family doesn’t eat out on a regular basis, you could start a tradition of going somewhere for lunch. Maybe Dad could even meet you on his lunch break. While you enjoy lunch have everyone share what they are most excited about this school year.
First Day Questionnaire
Give your children a first day of school questionnaire to fill out. Ask them things like:
- What’s your favorite movie?
- Favorite book?
- What are you most looking forward to this year?
- Favorite subject?
It’s fun to see how they change from year to year or even from the beginning to the end of the year.

Order Pizza for Lunch
Surprise your kids and have pizza delivered for lunch. If pizza delivery isn’t an option where you live, set up a make your own pizza bar for lunch. Then let your children enjoy making their own pizza creations.
Doughnuts for Breakfast
Start your first day of school by hopping into the car and going to your favorite doughnut shop. I know a couple of families that enjoy doing this every year.
No matter the first day of school tradition you choose for your family, remember to take pictures and have fun making memories with your children. Here’s to a great school year!
