Don’t think your homeschoolers want back to school clothes? You may want to re-think that. I have a little story my friend told me that has always stuck with me since I started homeschooling. Learn all about how you can save money on back-to-school clothes — yes, for your homeschooler.

How to Save on Clothes for Back to School

My dear friend from New Zealand has been homeschooling for 13 years and has four kids. When I first started homeschooling she shared so many stories with me. They left me encouraged, gave me amazing insight, and helped me mold my teaching style to one that fit my family perfectly.

She told me that a few years into homeschooling she noticed her daughter starting to regress and explain just how much she “hated” homeschooling. It wasn’t just a phase, so my friend took it seriously.

My friend creates circle pictures with her kids to help her understand how they are feeling. What she does is have the kids draw big circles on a paper. She asks her kids to draw how they are feeling and to just keep going until they feel they are done.

She then asks her children questions about what they drew. She inquires what certain images mean or how they make the child feel. The kids are more willing to talk about what is on the paper than talking about their feelings. They can disassociate themselves from the drawing and parents just listen to what the kids say without judgment or getting angry or too emotional. This means that after you speak about “what’s on the photo” you both can just leave it there.

Kids tend to feel so much better after the circle pictures. I do it with my kids when they are feeling a little more moody than usual. I even did it for myself a while ago, and realized the root reason why I was being exceptionally moody. It was pretty cool.

{Back to my point} She came to find out that her daughter didn’t hate homeschooling. However, she did feel a little bad when she saw all her cousins going back to school getting new school supplies like nice notebooks, backpacks, and clothes.

It turns out she just loved the feeling of getting these new items. My friend now gets her daughter new school supplies once a year and gets her a few new clothing items during the back-to-school sales, like all the other kids.

Getting new school clothes isn’t such a bad thing for us homeschoolers, plus the back-to-school sales provide pretty awesome deals. Better yet, the ideas that The Frugal Navy Wife has to save money will be just what you need to keep on budget!
