What is the Periodic Table of Elements?

The periodic table of chemical elements is also called the table of elements. Scientists use the periodic table to quickly get information they need about an element such as: atomic mass and chemical properties and symbols. 

The different elements are listed in the table by the structure of their atoms. Elements are listed in the order of their atomic number, which is how many protons are in each atom. The number of electrons in an atom equals the atomic number of an element. The number of electrons and the number of protons in an element are the same.

When is the Periodic Table taught in school?

The Periodic Table of Elements is normally introduced in middle school in the 6th – 8th grades. This is where students begin to learn about the basics of chemistry. They will learn about the atomic structure and what makes up different atoms.

1. Hydrogen (H) is the first element on the table.
2. There are 118 elements on the periodic table. Of all of these, 20 of the elements are man made.
3. Technetium (TC) is the first artificial element.
4. The periodic table gets its name because the rows in the table are called periods.
5. The planet Uranus got its name from the element Uranium.
6. Einstein’s name was given to the element called Einsteinium.
7. Dmtri Mendeleyev was a Russian scientist who first presented the table in 1869.
8. The table of elements is mostly comprised of metal. There are 90 metals in the periodic table.
9. The elements on the table are arranged to increase in order of atomic number.
10. Oganesson (OG) is the last element on the table.
