When we moved to an island, my husband sprung it on me that we were going to start composting. Comp, what? Surely, he meant computing. NOPE! He really meant composting. That didn’t fair too well in the beginning, for this city girl.
We were no longer city people. I had to come to grips with that – OK, maybe I am not there yet, but I am trying. My husband was back to his roots and back to farming his family’s land. I was, well… adjusting.
After researching why we should compost, the whole idea wasn’t too bad for me. I got it. I began to understand that setting aside biodegradable garbage and composting it to create a natural fertilizer for our garden, would really help it.
Of course, we were not going to use a $100 composting device to make it easier or neater for us, that is just unheard of here. We were going all-natural to attract worms to break down the garbage for us, yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay. Lord, help me.
I am OK with it now because I have been able to see the harvest it helps create. My husband grows root crops seasonally here and they turn out beautiful – if we can call root crops beautiful, that is. Fertilizing plants without all those harmful chemicals are a plus for me as well. I am all in now.
