First off, have you ever heard of whittling or carving? I surely hadn’t until reading this article. It is extremely interesting to me. I will tell you why in a minute. Explore whittling and carving to possibly try with your homeschool kids.
Most of the parents I know, in America, are afraid of allowing kids to handle knives. You can imagine how crazy it was when I move to an island and find out that not only do boys handle knives, they usually have machetes.
My son came home one day, maybe a year after we got to the island, and he brings home a present. He went out with his dad and brought home a machete. What do you say when he runs to you (with a machete, mind you) smiling ear to ear, saying His dad bought him his own machete.
I gave up my paranoia at that time and just gave in. My son went to the bush (our farm) with his dad to help him cut down weeds. He loves it and loves to have a machete, like his dad.
What do I say to that?
I love that they bond. I showed my husband this article and he said he will try whittling and carving with my son. I love that they bond like this. I wish it were a little safer, but I am still glad – and grateful.
Whittling is way safer and is super cool for kids.
