I was reluctant to teach astronomy in my home in the past because I honestly didn’t know much about it at all. I admittedly also sometimes associated astronomy with astrology, and that is very wrong. If you find yourself thinking the same, then why not explore 10 reasons to teach astronomy in your homeschool.
My family and I have recently started learning to appreciate the beauty of the night skies since moving to an island in the South Pacific. Before moving to a small island, I couldn’t tell the big dipper from the milky way if my life depended on it.
I just wasn’t exposed to staring at the stars growing up in the city. I don’t however, want my kids to miss out on learning all about God’s magnificent creation, every part of it.
I have learned that astronomy can help children (and myself) to completely appreciate and understand the magnitude of the heavens. I really appreciate the explanation of “classical” astronomy in this resource. I wanted to share it.
“Classical Astronomy is the everyday-life astronomy ancient people did: studying the heavens for navigation and for marking times of day and seasons of the year… it is all about practicing the lost art of using the naked eye to observe the clockwork of the heavens.”
I love that!
