As an English major, I was always intrigued by how children learned to read and write. Digraphs are a combination of two letters representing one sound, as in ph and ey. This FREE write the room activity with beginning digraphs is great practice to go alongside your lessons.

Diagraphs and blends are different, although sometimes get confused. A consonant blend is when two or more consonants are blended together, but each sound may be heard in the blend. The most common beginning consonant blends include: bl, br, cl, cr, dr, fr, tr, fl, gl, gr, pl, pr, sl, sm, sp and st.

Digraphs, on the other hand, combine the letters so that only one sound is heard from them. This simple printable will build your young learner’s early reading and writing skills.

Teaching digraphs can be super fun to learn. What is special about digraphs is that they are difficult to understand. Teaching this skill truly will build your child’s fluency and understanding how words work in the English language.

These additional resources will help you teach digraphs in your homeschool.
