I remember my days in public school, struggling in math. Nothing ever clicked for me and I was still counting on my fingers all the way until the end. Actually, I think I still count on my fingers sometimes. That’s embarrassing!
When I started homeschooling our oldest she was in kindergarten. Teaching counting and beginning math skills was pretty easy and I thought maybe teaching math wouldn’t be as difficult as I had feared.
Once she got into third grade and had to teach her about equivalent fractions and mixed numbers, along with her times tables… OH.MY. GOODNESS. – the tears. My child could not understand multiplication for anything and I didn’t have the patience to teach her how to memorize the facts.
Math about did me in; I truly feared I would ruin my child. We had already used 2 math programs and she was only in third grade!
Switching from one math curriculum to another caused her to have gaps I was unaware of until much later.

Thankfully, before she started fourth grade I learned about Teaching Textbooks, a self-teaching math curriculum.
This math curriculum felt like an answer to prayer. Not only did it TEACH her how to do her lessons, but there was also automatic grading.
It was a breath of fresh air to not have to break open a math textbook and read the scripted lessons from a teacher’s guide. Grading is also one of my least-favorite homeschool mom jobs.

Her new “math teacher” didn’t lose his patience or make her cry. His voice was friendly and helpful and he would even walk her through problems that she failed to answer correctly without yelling.
WOW. Could this be the answer to my math woes!?
When we would get together with families in our homeschool group, I would listen to other moms talk about math. I had an elementary aged daughter, so I wasn’t so concerned with algebra yet, but what I was hearing scared me.
Did you know math tutors can cost between $50-$100 an hour (and sometimes more!)?
Several of the moms in our homeschool group were paying a math teacher to meet with their students once a week for an hour – and paying $50 or more! There was no way I could afford that. When I considered the price of Teaching Textbooks for a year I felt like I knew a special secret and wondered why every mom didn’t just make the switch.
Teaching Textbooks has allowed me to keep a sense of peace in our homeschool. Our oldest graduated in 2018 and now my nine year old is using it. She’s actually between grades because I was way too anxious for third grade (that’s when Teaching Textbooks currently starts), so we started using it halfway through second grade.
I tossed aside the workbook math she hated and popped my disc in and off we went (they now offer 3.0, which is online, so no more discs needed!). She is currently in fourth grade with about 2.5 months left of school and just started the fifth grade level.
Teaching Textbooks offers full math curriculum for grades 3-7 as well as Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, and Pre-Calculus. Last year they released 3.0 and that has some even more amazing benefits, including a new large-family monthly plan.
Important information about Teaching Textbooks 3.0

When my oldest graduated high school she told me she had one word of advice for me when it came to homeschooling her sister. She told me to NEVER switch math curriculum; to stick with Teaching Textbooks all the way through!
