Spring Gardening

Here in Florida, we really don’t get a chance to have a spring garden in the spring because it gets hot so fast. So during the spring it is the perfect time to plant our large summer garden.

We love planting cucumbers, tons of tomatoes and peppers in our vegetable garden during the hot months. I like to have enough to can and make our own salsa. It seems that each year our garden gets bigger and bigger. It really can be addicting.

I have been gardening with my children since they were toddlers. We have been gardening together as a family for close to 20 years now. I think gardening is so important. Every family should learn how to grow your own food. Even if you just have a container garden in a few pots on a back porch.

How can we engage learners in gardening at home?

Kids of all ages love to get their hands dirty and to do hard work. They love to watch seeds grow, and they will take pride in something they have helped to nurture and create. You can even start with a flower garden.

Getting Children to Eat Vegetables

Gardening is a great way to get your children to sample fresh vegetables. I have enjoyed watching my little toddlers pop juicy, fresh, cherry tomatoes right off of the vine into their mouths. We have so many memories of trying new things in our gardens during a successful harvest.

Naturally, we turn everything we do into some kind of learning experience. That is the beauty of homeschooling. You can have an enjoyable gardening experience and educational learning at the same time.

Garden Journaling and Notebooking

One great way to turn gardening into a learning experience is by having your children keep track of what they are growing and logging the growth and keeping charts. These would go great in a nature/science notebook and a homeschool portfolio. They can even keep their own gardening notebook.

Designing a Garden Layout

Have your kids help you design a garden layout. Young children will have a great time creating their own garden. You don’t need much to get started, you can have a successful garden in a small space.

Maybe you have a large area that you want to landscape for a garden. Landscaping with logs is a creative way to create a garden space by laying logs down as garden beds, then filling with soil. Kids will love helping you gather up the found materials.

Create Your Own Garden Binder

A garden binder can be a helpful planning tool to keep garden records in. Sometimes it is hard to remember what you planted where and when. You can keep track of all of your gardening plans in one convenient location.

Make quick notes about what you planted and save plant information such as spacing. Did the beans you planted in the summer do well last year? If so, you may want to try them again. Keeping a vegetable garden journal in your planner is a wonderful way to keep track as well.

Some people even like to store the empty seeds packets with planting directions in their binder.
