I mentioned to you in our post with the science unit Learning About Weather that my elementary aged daughter loves learning about weather and storms. It has spurred a bunch of free homeschool printables that are weather themed, since I can also use them in our homeschool. This free Natural Disasters Reading Comprehension Science Unit goes perfectly with the one on weather.
Because we have had such great feedback and I am having success using them in our homeschool (we are using the human body systems printable pack right now), we created this one on natural disasters, which complements our printable reading comprehension pack on weather.
There are ten reading comprehension lessons in this unit, all based on natural disasters. You will learn about:
- Volcanoes
- Earthquakes
- Tsunamis
- Landslides & Avalanches
- Cyclones
- Typhoons
- Hurricanes
- Blizzards
- Floods
- Droughts
Each lesson will have short, informative text followed by comprehension questions based on what was read. It is suggested that a parent/teacher read the selection and ask the questions orally, answers can be given orally or written on notebook paper.
You can also use this unit as a guide for a notebooking journal. The student can read the lesson text (or a parent/teacher can read it aloud) and use a notebooking page for written narration using the questions as writing prompts. This often works better for students who struggle with reading comprehension questions.
Suggested vocabulary words are bolded. You can have your student look up the definitions to add to their science notebook. The Natural Disasters Reading Comprehension Science Unit is intended to be a supplement to your study of natural disasters and geared for grades 4-8. You will find answer keys in the index for each lesson.

Students will use a combination of written narration, copywork, drawing and labeling alongside the book to learn all about weather, natural disasters, and meteorology.
