Winter is a great time to learn about animals that live in cold weather year-round. Penguins are probably my favorite. I love to visit the zoo and watch them waddle around together. And then when they dive in the water they are so sleek and zoom around like a torpedo.
They are fascinating creatures too. My oldest daughter loves animals. She watches videos and documentaries about all kinds of animals. Penguins are one of her favorites too. In fact, she is the one who told me just how many different species of penguins there were.
Seventeen. Seventeen different types of species, in case you were wondering. So of course we had to study all of them. We learned which species was the biggest, the tallest, the shortest, how long each of them lived. You name it, we learned it.
That’s what I love about homeschooling. If you have a child interested in a topic, you can step back and study it. Along the way, we found some great resources to use in our study. If you want to make it even more fun, pick one of these holidays to study them – World Penguin Day (April 25) or Penguin Awareness Day (January 20).
