I LOVE when my home smells like Fall, Christmas, cookies, or vanilla! Unfortunately ALL synthetic fragrances give me instant migraines. So, that means, no store bought scented candles or wax melts for me. Forget plugins – if you have them in your home I cannot even enter.
Today we had to miss church due to some flooding in our neighborhood from another Nor’easter. We got to the front of our neighborhood and had to turn around. Anna (8 years old) and I decided to make good use of our time and make some smell-goods for our home. My teen has been dying for Christmas to get here and when she woke up and said “what is that smell – it smells like Christmas?!” I know I scored.
Not everyone will think that the essential oil combination of Thieves smells like Christmas, but it does to us. I didn’t use Thieves, but the Plant Therapy blend called “Germ Fighter” which we have found to smell almost identical but for a fraction of the price (same ingredients.) I like Plant Therapy oils and the lower price tag is a plus!
I already had some beeswax on hand from when we made homemade lip balm (that works great on other skin conditions like Eczema or Psoriasis too!) I found this recipe for all-natural wax melts and since it was super easy – I gave it a shot.
The first try was a fail. I saw a suggestion to use vanilla extract and ground coffee – that sure does sound like a wonderful scent, huh? My wax was all nice and melted, but as soon as I put in Sarah’s homemade vanilla extract it got all hard and clumpy. I tried to put it back in my “double boiler” and it didn’t really help. So, I added in my ground coffee and stirred. Still clumpy. It sure did smell good though. I was going to use it, but then I got all worried about the Vodka used to make it and decided against putting it above an open flame.
So, I tried again and used 30 drops of Germ Fighter essential oil. The results – delish! The smell in my home is intoxicating.
What you need:
Plus you will need a jar, something to stir, a pan and a silicone mold tray to form the actual shapes.
I am thinking these would make GREAT Christmas gifts! Get some pretty molds, tie in a nice bag or box them all pretty and you can even get an affordable ceramic wax melt “crock” such as these. We found ours at Michaels in their 70% off clearance section!
