Alexander Graham Bill did important work in communication for the deaf and established a school for the deaf in Boston, Massachusetts. He was also a professor of speech and vocal physiology at Boston University. Teaching and experimenting with telegraph messages and devices to help the deaf learn to speak is what sparked the idea for the telephone.
