I know many of you have already started school, and many of you start after Labor Day. I am one of those that starts ON Labor Day. My husband is home, and he is here to help me lay down the ground rules. It’s just always been a nice day to ease into school.
We have some fun traditions that we always do on our first day of school. These usually take up most of the morning so that is why we do a very light first day of school. I wanted to share our traditions with you, and some other ideas I found that look really fun!
Not Back to School Presents:
The first day of school is like Christmas around here! Before we do anything on the first day of school, I set out presents for all of my kids to see when they first come out of their rooms in the morning. My husband and I get up and make coffee and then we set their gifts out on the kitchen table.
These are not extravagant gifts. Most of the times they are just basic school supplies that they will need throughout the year. Since we don’t go off to school they aren’t getting brand new school clothes, backpacks and lunch boxes each year, so I do like to make it special for them. One year, I got all of my little girls sparkly lap desks. I usually get them each a cute binder and folder that is just for them, and their own pencil boxes with personal supplies. We always give them a cute workbook, coloring or doodle book as well.
This is also in our Not Back to School Present Category. We love buying these homeschool t-shirts from Great Products. Every August they have a $5.99 Homeschool T-shirt Sale! My kids will be so excited for the brand new Star Wars Homeschool T-Shirts!
“Not Back to School” Traditions:
A Big Breakfast:
There are so many fun ways you can do this. I have some friends that go to the same breakfast cafe every year for breakfast and others that get donuts or go to Denny’s on the first day of school. One year my husband brought us donuts and coffee which was fun, but we usually make pancakes or a french toast bake.
1st Day of School Signs:
After breakfast we do our annual 1st day of school signs. I know you have all seen the signs. Yes, they are dorky and silly, but my kids look forward to them every year. You can find lots of free printables on line or you can make your own signs.
Here are some free printable first day of school signs:
