We are constantly going through pencils in our house. I am not kidding when I say that when I open a new pack of pencils on Monday that by the end of the week they are gone! They are either lost, have broken erasers or the pencils get snapped in half. Sharpening them over and over again can be a pain as well. I have one child that always decides it’s time to sharpen their pencil shortly after I get her started on her copywork!
I was very intrigued when I first read about The World Class Magic Pencil by Magic House. I wondered how this could really be true.
- fully automatic
- lead self advances as it moves across the paper
- easily refillable (reduced lead breakage)
- latex free eraser
- smart design, comfortable to hold
- no sharpening, no clicking, just writing
- durable, long-lasting-saves trees
I thought “this sounds too good to be true, how can a pencil self advance as it moves? This has got to be crazy expensive!”
When we received our package we were pleasantly surprised. I don’t write with pencils that often, but my 9th grader goes through A LOT of pencils! What better way to actually test out a product then to give him the pencils to try for himself?
Here are his thoughts:
I had the opportunity to review the “World Class Magic Pencil” by Magic House. I received the blue and green pencils. I liked the bright colors, it helped to set them apart from a regular pencil. When I used the “Magic Pencil” I noticed that it felt like a pencil but wrote just like an expensive pen. It made my handwriting look nicer and a lot smoother. The pencil is automatic and does not need to be clicked to let the lead out; it does it all on its own. When compared to a regular pencil, the Magic Pencil eraser erased much better and cleaner than a regular pencil. The eraser was much more sturdy.
The only negative I found was that if you laid the pencil down and accidentally bumped it on something it would sometimes self advance, which would make the lead too high to write with. I realized that I needed to be careful not to bump it. Even with that happening, one lead still lasted me about two weeks using it daily for my schoolwork. It lasted a lot longer than a regular pencil would normally last me. Overall, I liked this pencil more than a regular pencil or a mechanical pencil. It wasn’t clunky and cheap plastic like a mechanical pencil where you have to click every time you need the lead to come out. I loved that I never had to sharpen my pencil and it looks cool too!
To sum it up, this is a really cool pencil! I would be cautious giving it to a smaller child that may have a tendency to lose pencils, but it would make a great school gift for an older student. I noticed that my son took great care of his pencils and made sure to keep them in a safe place because they were different and nicer than regular #2 pencils. We were very pleased with these pencils and I really did notice a difference in his handwriting, like he mentioned in his review. It was much neater!
The price is affordable as well! One pack of 2 pencils with 12 lead refills is only $3.99. A pack of 12 cheaper quality #2 pencils is usually around $2.50 at an office supply store. The refill packs are $1.97 for 12 leads which is cheaper than a pack of pencils! One lead lasted us two weeks whereas we would go through an entire pack of cheap pencils in about the same time frame! The Magic Pencil, is modern, environmentally friendly, affordable and a fun treat to have in your homeschool!
