I have one child that gets overwhelmed easily. If there is a lot of chaos and more than one thing going on at once (which is an every day occurrence at my house) she gets stressed out. This can turn into bad behavior if I don’t help her to get herself calm first. She is slightly OCD and when things are out of order she starts to tense up and feel out of control and this can lead to a big out of control fit! I have noticed this with children that have sensory processing issues as well. There are a lot of ways to help to get a child calm before a storm breaks out, or to even calm them after the stress has begun.
I have been reading up about the new trend of coloring for adults and how it can bring a sense of calm, and help eliminate stress. I know some friends who like to doodle and zentangle and they love the relaxing feel they get doodling and coloring. This must work for children as well! One day I printed some zentangle doodle bookmarks for my daughter and gave them to her when she was stressed out. She was fascinated by the patterns and intricate details and immediately calmed down and began to color. She now asks me to color on a regular basis and I have noticed a huge difference in her temperament.
