Do you love Autumn?

Hi everyone! Sandie here, from Little Learning Lovies. Don’t you just LOVE this time of year? I live in beautiful Virginia, nestled right in the Shenandoah Valley, surrounded by mountains and amazing National Parks. Autumn simply rocks here. I hope you are enjoying the season wherever you are!

Something Special For Your Little Ones…

If your young learners are anything like MY little one (she has just turned four!) you are probably always running out of fun activities to keep them learning. I made a special new printable for you that is SURE to keep them occupied for at LEAST ten minutes. Maybe twelve, if they try to color neatly ;)  Take a look:

Coloring Isn’t Scribbling…

Something I’m working on with my 4-year-old is encouraging her to do her best coloring. Sometimes she’s really careful and totally amazes me. And then she’s suddenly 4 again and scribbles all over her work. *Sigh*

If you use our Autumn Scarecrow Number Match Game with your little one, you can try a few different things.

  • First, try having them only color in the seeds on the sunflowers. They can count them as they color.
  • Next, choose some other small feature for them to color, like the scarecrows nose.
  • Demonstrate by coloring one yourself. No need to talk a lot. They’ll watch what you do and work hard to emulate you. (They love you, after all, and look up to you in every way!)
  • Another fun thing to do is challenge them to color all the hats, but make sure each is a different color.

Wait… I Thought This Was Counting Practice!

Well, of course it is! :)  But who said every activity should only have a single educational goal?

You can play the counting part of the game in a few ways, too!

  • First, let them count the seeds on each of the sunflowers and then place the crow holding the correct numeral on the scarecrow mat. Pretty straightforward and if your little one has ever played anything like this, you’ll probably be able to skip all instructions.
  • Next, try handing your little sweetie one of the crows and see if they can find the sunflower it belongs to. This is a bit trickier but it is an excellent way to encourage your young learner to create quick counting techniques. These are tricks that most people naturally come up with on their own (and most people can automatically recognize groups of up to 5 without having to specifically count them. After that our brains need to find patterns to make it a quicker task, like counting by twos)  Whatever tricks your learner comes up with, allow them the time to come up with them. You may never even find out what their tricks are! And that’s just fine…
